Importing a car privately:

VRT: You need to declare the vehicle is imported within 24 hours of arriving in Ireland and pay Vehicle Registration Tax (VRT)to the Revenue Commissioners at a vehicle Registration Office. This regulation is enforced by the Gardai and Traffic Wardens, you are liable to a fine for non display of an up to date road disk.

NUMBER PLATES: You have 3 business days to get the registration plates on your vehicle. This is enforced by the Gardai. The risk is being charged with driving with false number plates, this is a serious offence and can involve a jail term if convicted.
